The shell is the program that reads what you type, runs it, and prints the result. On this machine it is Bash.
Your terminal is on the left. The prompt learner@devjourney:~/project$ tells you who you are (learner), which machine you're on (devjourney) and where you are (~/project). The $ means you're a regular user. You never type the prompt itself.
This lab is the hands-on companion to the The Shell lesson from Linux Journey (CC BY-SA 4.0).
echo prints back whatever text you give it. Type this and press Enter:
echo Hello World
Hello World
echo is the command; Hello and World are its arguments.
The shell splits arguments on spaces, so extra spaces disappear:
echo Hello from Bash
Quotes turn everything inside them into one argument, spaces included:
echo "Hello from Bash"
Run both and compare the output.
Press the Up arrow: your last command comes back. Edit it with the Left/Right arrows and Backspace, then press Enter.
Use this to turn your previous command into:
echo Linux is fun
Linux commands are case-sensitive. Try a capital letter:
Echo hi
Echo: command not found
Now the lowercase version, which works:
echo hi
You ran your first commands in Bash.
Echo and echo are different.
