OSI Model

The Open Systems Interconnection model is a seven-layer reference framework. It gives engineers a shared vocabulary for locating responsibilities, interfaces, and failures; it is not a literal description of every implementation.

The Seven Layers

From lowest to highest, the OSI layers are:

1. Physical: signals, media, connectors, and bit transmission.
2. Data Link: local frames, link addressing, and media access.
3. Network: logical addressing and forwarding between networks.
4. Transport: communication between endpoints or processes.
5. Session: managing communication sessions.
6. Presentation: data representation, transformation, and encoding.
7. Application: network services used by applications.

Using the Model as Vocabulary

Statements such as “a Layer 2 loop” or “a Layer 4 port” identify a functional area without explaining every implementation detail. A real protocol may span boundaries, and encryption, tunnels, proxies, or overlays can create several nested layers.

Comparing OSI and TCP/IP

The Internet protocol suite and the OSI reference model developed through different standardization histories. The practical TCP/IP model often groups OSI session and presentation responsibilities into its application layer and combines physical and data-link concerns into a link or network-access layer. Mappings are approximate, not proof that one stack was implemented directly from the other.

Troubleshooting Across Layers

Begin at the symptom and test assumptions rather than mechanically checking layers in numeric order. A web failure may involve local link state, IP routing, transport reachability, TLS, name resolution, authentication, or application behavior. Evidence at one layer can direct the next test without proving that higher layers work.

Summary

You can now use the OSI model as a layered diagnostic vocabulary.

1. Name the seven layers in order.
2. Associate each layer with its broad responsibility.
3. Treat mappings to TCP/IP as approximate.
4. Use layer evidence to guide, not replace, end-to-end tests.
